Do Christians worship Three Gods or One?

Simple Answer: We worship only ONE God.

Longer Explanation:

The God with whom we worship is a tripartite being, which is a fancy way of saying He consists of three persons in one often referred to as the Trinity. These ‘persons’ do not operate as separate entities but are in constant harmony with one another. Their thoughts, breath everything is in sync, in their unison they are GOD. These persons are:

  • The Father
  • The Son
  • The Holy Spirit

In my early understanding I used to think that these 3 persons were a symbol of Gods character or a way in which we could understand him. As a father we could understand him to be loving and patient like a parent, as a son an example of how God wants us to be and how willing he is to humble himself before us so that he could be with us and the Holy Spirit the power of God. However, with time I came to realise that they are not characteristcs of God but are persons

Okay. This is an extract taken from one of the Fall for Christ posts, although it is not an accurate representation of the dynamics of the trinity it did help me to have some understanding

God created us with a body, soul and spirit, but when Adam ate of the apple in Genesis 3, His act of disobedience separated Him from God (this was the death which God warned would occur). As mentioned in Seeing Greater Things, God is Spirit and we can only understand Him when we ourselves move beyond fleshly understanding and into spiritual understanding. This is why God often communicates with our Spirit rather than with our Body or Soul because our spiritual self can perceive the spiritual things, in the same manner our earthly body can perceive the invisible wind blowing. So when Adam fell, our Spirit self died immediately, and the line of communication between God and us was separated because we could no longer perceive Gods thoughts and ways as we did before, and because your Body, Soul and Spirit are so connected when one dies the rest soon follow (they have been made weaker without a channel to God) and have been made vulnerable to sin and its effects such as sickness, deceitful hearts etc

It is our physical structure where our Spirit and Soul resides in. When we die it is the part that is buried in the ground.

Is an eternal part of our being, and acts as our Mind, making decisions. It holds emotions and can house good or bad things.

Is the part of our being that can hear and speak with God in Spirit and Truth. However, the spirit-man is dead in most of mankind.

From this I could begin to understand how the Holy Spirit , The Father and the Son could be one God and not 3 because in as much as My body, Soul and Spirit operate as 3 persons they are utlimatly, one individual and that individual is me. However, 3 weeks before starting the ‘Fall for Christ February’ series I stumbled on something that honestly made me question whether I had the right to do this series as all my prior understanding of who God is was shattered, and I honestly felt like I was re-starting as a new believer from the ground up. One of the commentary books that I was reading in preparation for the series ( I think it might have been John McArthur or the DAKE) pointed something out in John 1: 32-34:

And John [the baptist] testified, “I watched the Spirit descending
from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him [Jesus]”

John 1:32

In this verse John the Baptist witnessed the physical presence of both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in one location as two seperate persons. This made me realise that perhaps I can not contain God to my physical understanding of the ‘body, soul and spirit’, for in as much as I have them they don’t present themselves as 3 seperate persons visible to everyone besides myself. So in as much as my previous undertsanding helped me to understand the unity of the trinity it was not able to grasp the depths of God and why he wants us to be part of His harmony (John 17:21).

Now I am not a scientist, my understanding of the world is through the analysis of political literature not maths or astro-physics or anything that is formulaic. However, there is an ‘thought’ that Einsten brought about concerning space dimensions, I think the video below will help me explain a bit better.

I urge you to watch the full video before continuing to read the rest of this post

4th Dimensions

All I know is that we worship one God, and God’s persons serve to function different purposes though they are not limited to just one function. I think this is why Christ often uses the ‘body of Christ’ as a representation of the trinity. We, the church represent the body of Christ, but there are many churches across the world and we all speak different languages, we all look different from one another, we follow different customs and purposes, some churches have been formed specifically to reach out to young people, or to people living in gang culture, or to people living under a different faith such as buddhism or even atheism–> But, ultimatly we make up a unified entity that amalgamates (fuses us) us so that we ultimatly look and sound and talk as a single body with Christ as the head.

I still haven’t been able to grasp the full depth of God but I hope to soon move past my 2D perspective and go beyond 3D. I end this post with one of my favourite scriputres:

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when the perfect comes, the partial will cometo an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put aside childish things…. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known

  1. I don’t know why it is not showing so I’ll write it here in the comment section: The soul is

‘Is an eternal part of our being, and acts as our Mind, making decisions. It holds emotions and can house good or bad things.’
