GRACE is the free unmerited favour of God, the same GRACE that showed mercy to us so that we could receive salvation. GRACE is not earned, it is not something deserved. There were no mountain that we had to climb, or bears we had to fight, no amount of missionaries and charity work could ever have afforded us with such GRACE.
‘But God who is abundant in mercy… made us alive’ (Ephesians 2:4-5), by grace we have been saved through our faith in Jesus Christ and not by our works lest we boast ( Ephesians 2: 8-9)
We were made a new creation in Christ Jesus for ‘good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them’ (Ephesians 2:10). Before our salvation, no amount of work that we did could ever be classified as ‘good’, for before Christ all our righteous acts were like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) any attempt to cleanse ourselves was pitiful. However, now that we have been saved through Christ we no longer ‘walk-in flesh but walk by the Spirit’ (Romans 8:5), and if we walk by the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, we walk with the mindset of Christ, who is good. The effects of having the indwelling Holy Spirit is the good works, for how else should anyone tell that we walk by Spirit if we are not reflecting the character of the Spirit which is ‘ love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control’ (Galatians 5:22-23)?
We as Christians have the task to practise the fruit of the Spirit daily, this my friends is us working out our salvation, this is us making our new life in Jesus Christ fully displayed so that all may see (Philippians2:12 TPT). What’s more, it is God (the Holy Spirit) who is working in us helping us to not only display His character but He is giving us the perseverance and will to do so (Philippians 2:13).
If we were to do this on our own we would be labouring in vain, for all is vain without God.
